Meeting current code minimums reduces collapse risk in a design-level earthquake but doesn't guarantee zero damage — code compliance is a life-safety standard, not a no-damage standard. Homeowners in high-value or high-occupancy properties sometimes choose to exceed code minimums (added base isolation, more conservative bracing) for better post-earthquake usability, at a proportionally higher cost. For most residential renovations, meeting or modestly exceeding current NSCP provisions is the reasonable target.
